This is my third year sweating

I’m sweating to fight for equality, one sweaty session at a time!

Why I’m Sweating with Pride

I'm taking on Sweat with Pride this June! 💦🌈

Right now, schools, workplaces, and even doctors’ offices aren’t safe for many in our community—and it’s putting lives at risk. LGBTQIA+ Kiwis face higher rates of mental illness, suicide, and STIs like syphilis, mpox, and HIV.

So, I'm fighting discrimination with perspiration—doing spinal rehabilitation and physiotherapy for 21 minutes each day in June to raise money for life-changing Rainbow support services.

This cause means the world to me, and I’d be SO grateful if you could chip in to help me reach my goal. Every dollar makes a difference.

Thank you so much for your support! ❤️

My Friends Have My Back (except any bits the surgeon took out)

Photo: Me about to nope my way out of ASRU, May 20th, 2025. My ‘Bron for a Walk’ cushion (the inspiration for my page name) was a gift from my friend Evie, one of an incredible group of people who helped (and are still helping) me get through this weird, weird thing. That includes all of you who have donated to my SWP - thank you so much!! If you are looking for more people to sponsor, allow me to suggest my sister Ngaire (best sister the world has ever known, but soz you can’t have her, she’s mine) and my friend Vanessa (climber and crafter extraordinaire and all-round lovely human): https://www.sweatwithpride.com/fundraisers/ngaistradamus https://www.sweatwithpride.com/fundraisers/vanessabray

Time and Distance

Tuesday 10 June 2025

After having decompression surgery on the 15th of March, my next big challenge was physical therapy. During my first session just 3 days later, two physios helped me to get to the edge of my hospital bed and sit upright for a short time. It took a while to be able to stand. On the 27th of March, I walked partway down the ward corridor, supported by a gutter frame and again assisted by two physios. I was surprised at how difficult but exhilarating this felt, and my favourite student nurse who happened to be nearby cheered me on as I awkwardly shuffled past. On the 1st of April, I roughly doubled my assisted walking distance, to 10 metres. Now home, on the first day of SWP, I walked 752 metres using crutches, and on Friday, 1.21 kms. I have to be careful because my fatigue cues are different now - still learning how to identify them - but being able to measure a walk in kilometres? Good times.

About Me and My Activities

Photo: Me standing on crutches, about to go on a half-day of ward leave from ASRU, 4th of May, 2025. I recently acquired an incomplete spinal injury (not recommended FYI, in case you’re thinking of getting one), so for SWP this year, I’m doing physio and rehab as part of what could be a lifelong project to improve my mobility, stamina, balance and general getting around happily-ness. From the 15th of March until the 20th of May this year, I was in hospital after a random infection of unknown origin squashed the nerves at the base of my spine, which took away my ability to walk or stand. One operation, 17 stitches, two months of sweat and tears, a heap of physio, and dozens of atrocious meals later, and I am home with a pair of crutches, ready to sweat with pride! I hope you will support me and the Burnett Foundation to raise funds for their important work. xo Bron

Will send more on dollar match day! Also, good work on all things spine! Sounds like some hard yakka mate. I know from exp spine things are no walk in the park (literally?) Hope you see some really good improvements. Sometimes it feels like it takes forever with spine getting betteryness, but then it does improve xx xx
