Why I’m Sweating with Pride

This June, I'm doing Sweat With Pride because I am angry.

In 2026, queer people in Aotearoa are expected to defend their right to exist. I am angry that trans people continue to be a political talking point. How dare you reduce trans and queer identity to headlines, debates, and identity politics soundbites, regardless of who is carrying the burden of your harm, or what you actually believe in? I'm angry that the Definitions of Woman and Man Amendment Bill can be proposed at all, normalising the public scrutiny of people's identities.

So much of this feels imported. We've seen the US descend into endless moral panic about gender and sexuality. Rather than learning from the harm it has caused, people chase division over issues that were never there. It is insane to me, through cost of living, homelessness, inequity, healthcare issues and so much else, people in power spend time arguing about whether others have a right to exist. Queer people have always existed. Trans people have always existed. Both throughout societies everywhere, long before colonisation.

The consequences are that we lose lives. Discrimination in healthcare, harassment in public, exclusion in institutions designed against them, and ridiculously disproportionate rates of mental health issues, self-harm and suicide. This is the result of systems that repeatedly tell people they are not worthy of safety, dignity, and belonging. I have been shocked at conversations I hear day to day, the way people will blindly follow harmful narratives that were made to distract us.

It is so easy to become so overwhelmed and depressed by this rise of hatred, but conformity is never something we will grant them. There has always been hope in our communities that continue to love, create and organise. Protect our trans whānau.

Thank you for your support <3>
