I’m sweating to celebrate and uplift my Rainbow whānau

Why I’m Sweating with Pride

I'm taking on Sweat with Pride this June! 💦🌈

Right now, schools, workplaces, and even doctors’ offices aren’t safe for many in our community—and it’s putting lives at risk. LGBTQIA+ Kiwis face higher rates of mental illness, suicide, and STIs like syphilis, mpox, and HIV.

So, I'm fighting discrimination with perspiration—exercising 21 minutes every day in June to raise money for life-changing Rainbow support services.

This cause means the world to me, and I’d be SO grateful if you could chip in to help me reach my goal. Every dollar makes a difference.

Thank you so much for your support! ❤️

Doing this gently

Tuesday 9 June 2026

I'd love to be able to throw myself into the sweating part of this challenge and get lots fitter and stronger... but I'm trying to be realistic about current limitations and practice self-compassion. I have chronic pain issues, and an interest based nervous system and sport/exercise are not interesting, often not fun, and don't give me that endorphin boost people talk about. I'm also working, parenting two kids who are facing their own challenges, and trying to recover from burnout, or at least get less burned out.

If someone is experiencing depression, doing exercise might help them feel better. For some of us facing different challenges, we have to be mindful of energy levels, fluctuating capacity, and also be aware of the negative impact that pressure and perfectionism can have on our well-being. And... if we get the balance right, it can be really beneficial for our wellbeing.

Today it was stormy, and my youngest was home from school, but we built an obstacle course around the house and I managed three laps and he raced around five times. It was enough to get my heart rate up, and he says it was fun. Tonight I will try and encourage my oldest to do a few gentle stretches with me, so we've made a tiny bit of progress before returning to the physio. We both have some joints that are over flexible and some muscles that are too tight.
