Why we’re Sweating with Pride
We are Pakuranga Rangers from GirlGuiding New Zealand, a group of 12-16 year olds in Auckland. We meet weekly and plan our own programme, which includes outdoor adventures, developing leadership skills, advocating for change, completing community service, and other fun challenges.
As young people in Aotearoa, we see a great need for quality support groups and programmes, especially for people who may face more challenges and discrimination. We know that our schools, doctors’ offices, and other places are still not safe places for many Rainbow people in Aotearoa and it’s putting lives at risk. More than half our rainbow whānau have experienced mental illness, and 1 in 5 of our rainbow rangatahi have attempted suicide. Things need to change.
So, along with our leaders, we are taking part in Sweat with Pride to raise money to support the Rainbow community. 🌈 We’ve each set our own fitness goals, committing to exercising for at least 21 minutes every day in June. Every dollar raised will go to Burnett Foundation Aotearoa and fund projects in partnership with RainbowYOUTH and InsideOUT to improve the mental and physical health of Rainbow communities in Aotearoa. Help us make a difference!
